I found these old Christian Dior ads from the 70s shot by fashion photographer Chris Von Wangenheim on Pinterest and had to share. Wangenheim’s sexy, glossy and somewhat perverse work was part of a movement that included Helmut Newtown and Guy Bourdin. Tragically Wangenheim died in a car crash in 1981, cutting his career too short.
I wish there was more fashion photography like this today–glossy, sexy with a twisted sense of humor. There are too many blank-faced models, droid-like androgyny and a general lack of fun today. Fashion needs irreverence. And more pretty dresses like the last image. It obviously doesn’t fit with the series, but it is beyond gorgeous.
