Each year as the holiday season approaches I have this fantasy of finding the perfect hostess ensemble. But the hunt is never as easy as it seems. I’m always looking for something that isn’t too fussy, but cool and dramatic enough that it makes more sense to wear at home than to a restaurant. This year, I have found an elegant solution–the satin slip dress or skirt.
Slip dresses, so popular in the 90s (think Kate Moss in a slip dress and sneakers), are having a major resurgence. And why not? They’re sexy, glamorous (you can make it very Carole Lombard in the 1930s) and effortless. You can choose a dress–my favorite are by Nili Lotan, above, or a skirt and camisole. The tactile element that makes it entertaining-at-home-appropriate? A slouchy sweater that is either whisper weight or heavier. Flat slides or sandals–no serious heels. And one or two pieces of standout jewelry. (Diamonds are always a good idea.) A monochrome palette is the most dramatic.
Plus a satin slip dress or skirt works beyond hostess duty–pack it for your next resort trip or once spring arrives wear it with sneakers a la Moss; then it becomes a versatile closet essential.
