It’s that time of year again. As I promised, the first of three videos on my zero-wast closet clean out strategy that will hopefully help you learn to live with less and sharpen your style. Where to begin? First create your Ultimate Packing List. It’s the quickest way to learn what you love most, what makes you feel your best, and perhaps what’s missing in your wardrobe. Remember: This is a zero-waste process, don’t throw anything out (landfill), I have a place for everything!
You can watch the video on YouTube below, or here on Instagram. (I love sharing this info, but being in front of a camera, not so much….I try! Someday I will get a proper editor to help). xx Jennifer
Love your video and the packing model probably works well for so many people, but not me. I basically never go anywhere that’s not a destination, and even to Paris, it’s very different than my everyday life in Ojai. I’m a good packer, but I’m sort of flailing around how to figure out what to wear on a daily basis that includes, exercise outdoors, cooking, grandchildren, painting, cleaning, out to lunch sometimes or dinner, without changing 15 times a day. So – that’s my challenge, and probably others, particularly right now….the daily uniform.
Aaaah, but your packing list should be for a trip to Ojai! Which briefly to me would mean excellent jeans, luxe tees, a couple of good cashmere sweaters, a good blazer or two, some simple casual dresses, boots, sneakers…..at least for now.
I can imagine doing this for seasons, as well, because I would definitely pack differently for summer than for winter. One mistake I made a while back is getting rid of all of my crap clothes — and then having nothing to garden or paint in! So it makes sense to have capsules really not just for weather, but for activities. I might not pack all my sports bras for a trip — but yeah, I need them for my daily run!
How brilliant!!! No blazers worn here, but I do have one beautiful Nels for trips, thanks to you. And yes, perfect packing list for a trip to Ojai, now.
I love this! For me this exercise feels more fun than piles on the bed.
May I ask for links on the gorgeous dress you are wearing (those sleeves!) and the tie dye (?) scarf at the end of the rack?
The dress is in a recent previous post.
The scarf from IPezzi diPinti is from last year and her pieces are hand-made in India and often one-of-a-kind. They are have-forever investments!
Why do you leave the designers sewn on tag on the arm of coat you wear often … doesn’t that come off upon purchase? Why would you leave on…
Good eye! Asked both my daughters and they thought I should leave it on, so am for time being. Kind of enjoy it seeming a little off.
Jennifer,
Can you please suggest some luxe T’s.
Also love the COS dress on you. I also fought it at your suggestion and it’s fabulous.
Thank you
Oh good, re COS dress. I am a big fan of Frances de Lourdes, but will also think of more when it comes to tees.
I loved when you did this before and am loving it again. I noticed on your IG feed that you tagged the designers, but could you possibly post the names of the items that you’ve chosen from each designer? Even on YouTube it’s hard to get a really good look at the details that would distinguish one piece from the next. Thank you!
Slow and thoughtful is the best way to declutter. I attempted the throw everything on your bed method and became so frustrated I threw everything back in the closet. The most helpful thing I’ve done is make a list of what I won’t buy, or wear, what doesn’t and does work on or for me and why. The why is important. Another point I’ve learned is just because I like it and it looks nice on someone else doesn’t mean it’s going to be right on me. Changing the subject-How does COS fit? The COS dress is on my wish list, but hesitated to buy it. I reached out to them about sizing but I’ve never heard back. I know there is a chart but that isn’t always helpful.
So true (also part of my Regrets list–buying things that look good on someone else but not necessarily you). I have a size Small in COS and am a 4/6.
Robyn, The COS dress fit fairly true to size. I bought a Medium and I am 5’6 160 lbs. Not too form fitting. I do find Cos sizing (like many brands now) to be all over the place. Sometimes I am a small, or an 8 or a 10. Frustrating at best. Hope this helps.
Thank you, I really dislike returning items, especially by mail.
