One of my favorite NYC museums, Neue Galerie, has a new exhibition launching today Wiener Werkstätte 1903-1932: The Luxury of Beauty, which I cannot wait to see. Wiener Werkstätte was a artist’s and craftsmen’s collective in Vienna during that period that produced elegant, modernist designs and correlated to the work of painters such as Klimt (his famous Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, above) and Egon Schiele. When I recently visited the studio of jewelry designer Emily Satloff of Larkspur & Hawk, I commented how her new designs had a similar Wiener Werstätte feel, and indeed, she said it was that period, and artists such as Paul Klee, that inspired her work. (You can find her pieces on her site, at Net-a-Porter and for info on those shown here email info@larkspurandhawk.com.) A dream day would be seeing the exhibit dressed in the above Valentino dress and some Larkspur gems, followed by a coffee and a piece of sachertorte at the period-perfect Cafe Sabarsky at Neue. A girl can dream….
