I took my youngest daughter vintage shopping in Brooklyn over the weekend and found what could be the best treasure trove of well-priced vintage Levi’s in New York. Front General Store in Dumbo is not new, but seems to fly under the radar. While they have a great selection of vintage jackets, Native American jewelry, Japanese pottery etc., it is their extensive collection of Levi’s, all relatively reasonably priced, that is impressive.
Vintage Levi’s are very sought after these days and there are a lot of fashion brands now devoted to reworking them. But a pair can easily cost $200-$500. (The Vetements reworked Levi’s that are $1400+ might be the most expensive jeans you can buy). Plus finding vintage jeans that fit is not easy and ordering a pair online is often frustrating. Believe me, I’ve tried. One size 28 can be so tiny you can’t zip them up, while a size 29 can swim on you. You really need to try several pairs on, and that is why you have to make the effort to get out and do it. At the Front General Store, my daughter and I each found a pair we loved–her’s black cropped 501s (they crop them with a raw hem), $98, and mine were slim fit vintage Levi’s (not sure of style), $128, that she actually picked out. (Note, the slim ones are all the way in the back on a rack in front of the dressing rooms.) While these should keep us happy for long time, I will definitely be going back.
