It is a rare magazine fashion shoot these days that I immediately fall in love with and want to emulate. Such is the case with this new Miss Vogue shoot by photographer Alique and styled by Julie Pelipas (the Fashion Director for Vogue Ukraine who is uber chic herself) for French Vogue in new April issue. I am always a fan of model Andrea Diaconu, probably because she wears tailored, clean clothes so well. I love the layered turtleneck, button-down shirt and jacket combos, the scarf tossed over a trench and the old-school gold earrings. The proportions sometimes feel 70s, other times somewhat early 9os. You definitely have to push the proportions a bit with these types of clothes, otherwise they veer into staid territory.

This is a beautiful shoot, especially in black and white. On a 20-something year-old the clothes look chic. I am afraid that as a 40-something year-old, I would look something of a throwback and rather dated. Thoughts?

Thanks for your comment Robin. I do not think that most of these clothes will date you if you’re older. Perhaps a beige suit that is classically tailored (you would really need to pair that with some unexpected elements), but that’s where I think proportion comes in. Choose a wide-legged pant or jeans, a softer, fuller trench coat, perhaps you skip the earrings, opt for sneakers instead of dressy shoes. I am a few years ahead of you and just bought a jumpsuit, a voluminous trench and pants. It is all about choosing modern proportions. There is no reason that as you get older you should dress more conservatively or safe. I think the contrary. The older women I look to for inspiration are those that defy convention.
