One thing you will never see on TFI is red carpet coverage, because it has zero relevance in most women’s every day life, plus personally, I don’t dream about wearing ballgowns—I find most completely un-modern. But I am making an exception because Pierpaulo Piccioli’s couture collection for Valentino he showed today is stunning, as well as many of Raf Simon’s first made-to-order designs he quietly launched this week for Calvin Klein. Both designers have created pieces that are completely feminine and thoroughly modern at the same time, but in different ways; under the new solo direction of Piccioli, Valentino has lost some of the stiffness it had before, and Raf has brought a sharpness to Calvin. I have been quietly complaining to friends that fashion is in a bad place—but these men have rekindled my romance with it. I hope this new elegance trickles into their upcoming ready-to-wear shows, I cannot wait to see.
