I always wish that galleries were open on Sundays, I would get to a lot more of them. Three shows I can’t wait to see (okay I already saw the Penn–you should go) are:
- Irving Penn Paintings (above left) at Pace Gallery. It’s the first exhibition ever of his paintings. He painted over prints which give them an unusual quality and the subtlety of his colors is sublime.
- Toyin Ojih Odutola’s exhibition When Legends Die at Jack Shainman Gallery. I first saw an exhibition of Toyin at the Whitney earlier this year and I am a fan. Her sketchings (amazingly they are not paintings) are lyrical and colorful. This is also the final in a series of a fictional story Toyin created of a regal family based in her home country of Nigeria.
- Lee Krasner Mural Series (not pictured) at Kasmin Gallery. Colorful and kinetic, these are modernist mini studies of unrealized larger works. It’s too bad they never came to fruition.
