I try to keep what I take to the beach easy, light and organized, especially when I travel. The right essentials make this happen. First, though I love straw market bags, I’m not dragging one across continents, so a collapsible cloth version you can either fit in your suitcase or double up as an everyday tote is best. Thin Turkish towels are all I ever take–they roll up, take up little space, and don’t get heavy from sand and water. I always have two other zipper pouches inside my tote–one for all the sunscreen, another for my cell phone, keys, a comb to detangle salty knots and Glossier balm dot com (tube lip balms are best in hot weather, they don’t melt like a stick). I love Rag & Bone panama hats, though they don’t pack well (but still can serve double duty as an everyday hat) and Ray-Ban sunglasses because they’re classic and aren’t $400 so if you lose or scratch them, you won’t cry. The one thing I still drag around is a good book–I’m a luddite through and through, no tablets here. Many people have told me this Bunny Mellon biography is a good book, so it’s next on my list. I never tire of classic Eres suit, and my coverup of choice is a plain white button down. In fact I have this Muji linen tunic and it’s coming with me to Positano.
