I will always have a soft spot for classic preppy style, which is in part why I loved the Miu Miu Spring show so much, because it was full-on cable knits and khakis with a twist. It was also completely unwearable unless your Hailey Bieber. That doesn’t mean you can’t create a more grown-up version of the look. The key piece? A men’s Polo Ralph Lauren cashmere cable knit sweater. This piece really brings back memories, because my late father used to wear them and my youngest still wears the red one we gave him for Christmas decades ago. I wonder if they still hold up as well? My advice to modernize it is to size it down so it fits a big snug and isn’t too long. Plus, all the other pieces shown here are just good core wardrobe basics. I particularly like the Matteau khaki pants. Those might be a spring must.

This style is my favorite of all time. Timeless, always cool. Talk about needing to buy less, as it feels modern & relevant always. I like to buy cashmere RL cable knits on RealReal (or borrow them from my husband). The more worn in, the better IMO!
Now I will be searching TRR! Thanks for that.
Thank you for the inspiration. I love a classic preppy look too. In fact, I have been searching for an updated pair of chino’s for a long time. I was excited to see the Matteau trousers but will need to pass as high waisted pants don’t suit me. The search continues for a mid-rise slouchy straight leg/or wide leg chino.
On another blog someone suggested getting khakis from the men’s department and having them altered.
Sometimes the men’s department is the place to go! As far as tucking shirt….depends on where your shirt and your sweater hit, and if you’re belting…you could always do a french tuck….just tuck in the front of both….which gives you a waist without having the extra bulk tucked into your pants.
Hmmmm. Check Nili Lotan and also Double RL…they sometimes have versions. Also watch The Frankie Shop….
I love classic preppy too. Thank you for this post and the suggestion of sizing down in sweaters it does make a difference. -not cropped but close fitting
Lastly, would it be best to tuck the shirt or leave it untucked? Thank you
Love your headline and this fantastic edit!
Thank you!
