Goals, Inspirations + Thought-Provoking Reads to Start Your Week
- Why Women Aren’t CEOs by Susan Chira. If you missed this Op-Ed in the NY Times yesterday, I highly recommend it. Whether you are a female entrepreneur or a stay-at-home mom, it is a wake up to call the fact that although much attention has been paid to women’s equality in the work place, the barometer for women who make it to the top has hardly moved. Putting our heads down and working hard isn’t enough. This coupled with the bro-culture so popular in the tech industry that has become, not surprisingly, problematic shows we need men and women to work together to create better opportunities for women.
- On a lighter note, I discovered M2M.TV, a site that has short clips and longer documentaries on mostly fashion related topics and includes everyone from the glamorous photographer Slim Aarons, to 60s model Twiggy, to Georgia O’Keefe, Dries Van Noten, and many many more. It is a wonderful rabbit hole to go down if you have time. (Or even five minutes.)
- Azzedine Alaïa at 35. I do not own an Alaïa dress, but I sure do want to #goals. He is celebrating his 35th anniversary and his clothes continue to be as elegant, sexy and iconic as ever. I used to think “Would I really spend $3500 on a dress?” But I’m over it. Men buy golf clubs. I want an Alaïa. Someday.
- The Defiant Ones. This short four-show HBO rock-umentary of Dr. Dre and producer Jimmy Iovene is fascinating if you like modern music and/or rap. It follows the careers of Dre and Iovene, who continue to be enormously influential in the music arena. Iovene produced (the best) records for Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Stevie Knicks, Gwen Stefani, Eminem, U2 and so many more. It’s always fascinating to see what motivates successful people. I found it riveting.
