At the current Paris Fall 2017 shows there is a lot of exaggeration going on—oversized coats (Sonia Rykiel), ballgowns so enormous they would fill up a freight elevator (Balenciaga), and serious amorphous blobs?? at Comme des Garcons. I get it and have witnessed it and appreciated those ideas in person (I remember the CDG bumps + gingham collection in 97 well when I was at Bazaar). Runways are for experimentation but unless you are tightly wound up in the tethers of the fashion world, which I no longer am, I think it’s difficult to relate to clothes that don’t jibe with reality. Unless you’re reality is akin to Bjork’s. What kind of clothes do make sense? The proliferation of pants and pantsuits on the women attending the shows. They look sophisticated and ready for action. Which is also what I loved about the Celine show. Some of the Celine silhouettes are still too exaggerated for my taste, but I love the idea of the look. Sure there are times when I want a dress, but many women I know spend their lives on the go, and sometimes a great pair of pants make the most sense.
