September is one of my favorite months of the year, and usually by this time I roaring to get back to business and leave summer behind. Not so much this year, and I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I’m going to Nantucket for a final summer hurrah next week. Whatever the reason, I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about fall clothes. I do know that I want (and need) very few new things. I’m going to be beyond picky about what I buy. And easy and luxe are the two words that keep coming to mind, because I want things that will hold up and don’t require a lot of thought when getting dressed.
I still think this Vogue Poland shoot photographed by Zoe Ghertner with Amber Valetta from 2019 sums up what I want to wear once it cools down: A good suit, a blazer to wear with jeans, a Chanel-style jacket (this Celine one in particular), sneakers (to wear with my suit), a feel-good coat (this year could be the year to get the Maxmara Mauela coat she’s wearing here), a good bag (the only thing I already purchased) and a pair of boots. Oh, and a cashmere sweater, or two or three, in neutrals like gray, camel, ivory. Then, of course, some of my jewelry.

Whose plaid blazer is that?
Enjoy Nantucket! – if you haven’t been already you must go to Atlantic on Federal Street. Colleen the owner curates a wide array of beautiful home goods, jewelry, and elegant , chic clothing you do not see everywhere.
These images took my breath away the first time that I saw them and they still do now. Amber Valetta simply defines the word “timeless” in these pieces. Jennifer, I owe you as apology…lol. After this issue was published, there was some discussion on this site about the cost of clothing and how much is too much. That plaid jacket is Celine and the price of it seemed outrageous at the time. If I had purchased it, I’d be just as happy to be wearing it this Fall as I would’ve been in 2019.
What are we talking for a good suit?
Your fall list is perfect for an urban lifestyle, but so many of us moved to a more country lifestyle during the pandemic and are staying put. Was hoping that maybe you and Heidi Wynne (one of the people who did move to the country) could do a post on a Fall/Winter list for us. I still care about fashion and looking my best, but I don’t want to buy for a life I no longer lead. Your jewelry would work for sure…but not much else other than cashmere sweaters on your list. What’d you think?
First, jennifer you have the best inspiration posts! But..I agree KSL, I find casual outfits the hardest to find and put together. To add to that, I live in the southeast and it is often quite warm through the end of October. Wanted: clothes that can take me from working in the yard, to the grocery store, and maybe a casual dinner out.
Who makes that fantastic khaki suit in the first photo?
